The Mississippi Department of Transportation and its partners held two grand openings in one day October 23.
Interstate 22 was officially opened in a ceremony in New Albany Friday under cloudless skies and cool breezes. The interstate designation upgrades Highway 78, and both signs will be posted for a time. A four-mile segment of new I-269 was opened at the Mississippi/Tennessee state line that afternoon.
Dignitaries with MDOT and the Tennessee Department of Transportation, state and local officials and congressmen praised the partnerships between the Federal Highway Administration, MDOT, TDOT and elected officials for building out the infrastructure that promises safe highways and economic growth in Mississippi and Tennessee.
The building of the interstate system has been in progress in the federal highway program for over 50 years, established by the Federal Aid Highway Act of 1956 under the Eisenhower administration.
