Highways

Existing and potential industrial sites in Marshall County have ready access to a growing network of interstate and four-lane highways.

• US Hwy 78, connecting Memphis to Birmingham and Atlanta, has been designated the new Interstate 22. It serves industrial parks in Byhalia, Holly Springs, and Potts Camp.
• US Hwy 72, traversing the northern section of Marshall County, connects Memphis to Huntsville, Chattanooga, and the East Coast.
• Four-lane MS Hwy 302 forms the southern boundary of the Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park. It intersects with US Hwy 72, connecting that route with US Hwy 78 at Olive Branch and Interstate 55 at Southaven.
• Groundbreaking for the construction of Interstate 69 was held June, 2011. This new highway, eventually to run from Canada to Mexico, will pass through and alongside the Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park. I-69 will connect the park to Interstate 40 within 17 miles.

Railroads

Marshall County is served by two mainline rail carriers and a shortline railroad.

• The Norfolk Southern railroad runs east and west along the Mississippi-Tennessee border five miles from the Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park.
• The Burlington Northern Sante Fe (BNSF) railroad runs east and west through the middle of Marshall County. Its route passes seven miles from the Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park and already serves industrial sites in Byhalia, Holly Springs, and Potts Camp.
• BNSF’s intermodal service combines rail, truck, and sea transportation into a single package. The company has announced a $40-million expansion of its Tennessee Yard at Memphis, just 30 miles from Holly Springs. The upgraded intermodal facility will handle more than 1 million lifts per year.
• The Mississippi Central Railroad runs from Oxford, Mississippi, to Grand Junction, Tennessee, where it connects to the Norfolk Southern.
• Comprehensive engineering studies have been completed and routes have been determined so that rail service can be brought to the Chickasaw Trail Industrial Park within 24 months.

Airports and Air Cargo

Marshall County industries have convenient access to one of the nation’s largest airports.

Memphis International Airport, 45 minutes from Holly Springs, offers connections to all major national and international destinations. One of the nation’s busiest airports and the world’s largest cargo airport, it is a national hub for Northwest Airlines and world headquarters for FedEx.

Holly Springs-Marshall County Airport, operated by the Marshall County Industrial Development Authority, provides local air service. The runway is 3,200 feet long and 60 feet wide.

FedEx, the world’s largest express transportation company, is headquartered in Memphis and operates its primary overnight package sorting facility at the airport. The company’s share of cargo at the airport has been at least 95% since 1992, keeping the airport active around the clock.

Ports and Waterways

The International Port of Memphis is the second largest inland port on the shallow-draft portion of the Mississippi River and the fourth largest inland port in the United States. The port, which is ice free throughout the year, is 400 river miles from St. Louis and 600 river miles from New Orleans.

The port covers the Tennessee and Arkansas sides of the Mississippi River from river mile 725 to mile 740. Within this 15-mile reach, there are 68 water-fronted facilities, 37 of which are terminal facilities moving products such as grains, petroleum, tar, asphalt, cement, steel, coal, salt, fertilizers, and rock and gravel.

The Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway is a 234-mile connecting link between the Tennessee and Tombigbee Rivers. It links the Sunbelt states with 4,500 miles of waterways in 14 river systems serving mid-America. Port facilities within the corridor offer intermodal services and access to deep-water ports along the Gulf Coast for international trade.
